Beautiful message on the prodigal son! This parable clearly speaks to us about the love of God and to many brothers and sisters in Christ who are living in self condemnation or have swayed away from the path of righteousness that if we return to God with all our hearts, His arms are wide open to receive us because His a wonderful and loving Father.

Thank you for your comment, Nafuna. I think everybody, deep down, is looking for the way home, just like you say, and that’s why this parable resonates with everyone. The poet put it beautifully: “Trailing clouds of glory do we come from God who is our home”(William Wordsworth).
Thank you Fr. Hugh for taking the time to put in context this Merciful Parable. I think it is possibly the one Parable spoken by Jesus that most families in particular can relate to, especially where difficult relationship exist within for whatever reason. For me the Parable confirms the unconditional love of our parents as it can equally be a Mother’s love for son and daughter as a Father’s. Amen

Good point, Tom. The unconditional love of parents for their children resembles God’s extravagant love for us. I’ve always marveled, when visiting prisons, how you could count on mothers to be there for a wayward child.
